What to look for in a VPN for torrenting
When you download a torrent, every other peer can see your IP address. A VPN replaces it with the address of the VPN server. That only works if the VPN allows P2P traffic on its servers, so that is the first thing we check.
A kill switch blocks all traffic when the VPN connection drops, so your real IP address never leaks mid-download. A no-logs policy means the VPN doesn't keep a record of what you did. Every VPN on this page has both.
After that, speed and jurisdiction set them apart. WireGuard makes large downloads faster, and a VPN based outside the Fourteen Eyes countries is harder for those governments to pressure into handing over data. A dedicated IP can help if trackers or private sites block shared VPN addresses.
Our top pick right now is FastestVPN, at $0.83 a month when you pay for 2 years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which VPN is best for torrenting?
Of the 26 VPNs that qualify, FastestVPN ticks the most boxes, from $0.83 a month when you pay for 2 years. It's also the cheapest of them.
Is torrenting with a VPN legal?
Torrenting itself and using a VPN are legal in most countries. Downloading copyrighted files without permission is not, with or without a VPN.
Do I need a kill switch for torrenting?
Yes. Torrent clients keep running in the background, so if the VPN connection drops, your real IP address would be visible to the swarm until you notice. A kill switch stops that.
